Summer Is Here: If You Suffer From Hyperhidrosis, Try Our miraDry® Treatment
Summer brings sunshine, beach days, and more time outside. But if you have hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating), the warm season can also mean discomfort, embarrassment, and frequent wardrobe changes.
While sweating is your body’s way of cooling down, hyperhidrosis goes beyond what’s needed, often interfering with your daily life and confidence.
If you avoid social situations because you can’t stay dry even with the best antiperspirant, it’s time to consider other options, like miraDry®, a noninvasive treatment that reduces underarm sweating for good.
At Associated Skin Care Specialists, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jane Lisko offers miraDry treatments at our Eden Prairie, Minnesota, clinic. Here, we explain how miraDry works, who it’s for, and what to expect.
What is hyperhidrosis?
Everyone sweats. But if you regularly sweat through your clothing, even when it’s not hot, you may have hyperhidrosis. This condition occurs when you have overactive sweat glands that produce more sweat than your body needs.
The two main types of hyperhidrosis:
Primary focal hyperhydrosis
Primary focal hyperhydrosis is the most common type and is often inherited. It affects areas such as the underarms, hands, feet, and face, and often begins in early adulthood.
Secondary generalized hyperhydrosis
Secondary generalized hyperhydrosis is often caused by an underlying condition like diabetes or medications like naproxen. It tends to occur later in life and may cause widespread sweating, including night sweats.
While hyperhidrosis can occur year-round, summer heat and humidity can worsen symptoms.
When it’s time to get help
Excessive sweating isn’t just inconvenient, it can also affect your quality of life. If you sweat too much and experience any of the following, it’s time to get help:
- Visible sweat stains
- Frequent clothing changes
- Interference with daily activities
- Emotional distress
- Skin irritation or infections
You should also seek care if you notice a sudden increase in sweating, which may indicate you have an underlying medical condition.
An evaluation can determine the cause of your excessive sweating and guide treatment options, including advanced solutions like miraDry.
What is miraDry?
MiraDry is a noninvasive, FDA-cleared treatment for excessive underarm sweating. It uses controlled thermal energy to permanently destroy sweat glands in the underarm area, reducing both sweat and odor.
Most people experience little to no pain during treatment. Swelling, tenderness, or bruising may occur, but these generally resolve within days.
There’s no downtime, but you may need to avoid strenuous exercise for a brief time.
What to expect during and after treatment
During the in-office procedure, we:
- Mark the treatment area
- Administer a local anesthetic
- Place the miraDry device on the skin to deliver thermal energy
The entire process takes about an hour; afterward, you can resume your usual activities. You may experience a significant reduction in underarm sweat after the first session, but we may recommend a second treatment to get the best results.
Best of all, results are permanent.
