Cosmetic Dermatology from Associated Skin Care Specialists

We offer a variety of cosmetic services at Associated Skin Care Specialists. Below is a brief description of these available procedures. Please schedule a consultation to discuss which services will best help meet your particular goals and needs.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are used to lessen fine lines and brown spots from sun damage. Acne might also be improved with chemical peels. Typically, several peels spaced over several months time is recommended to see the full benefit. We perform glycolic acid peels, starting with a lower strength peel and advancing to stronger peels as tolerated.

Botulinum toxin A is a protein that is injected into the skin that prevents full contracture of particular small muscle groups. Cosmetically this is used to diminish and soften wrinkles on the face. This can be used for wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyes (called the glabella), around the eyes (often referred to as crow’s feet), on the nose, and even around the mouth. Botox is also used to manage hyperhidrosis (overactive sweating).

Filler agents

There are multiple fillers that are injected into the skin to fill in wrinkles and lines from aging. Fillers are also used to plump and rejuvenate the lips. The nasolabial fold (the line between the cheek and the upper lip) is the most common area where fillers are used. Fillers can also be used for acne scarring, although the improvement is not dramatic.

Collagen is the oldest filler. There is a slight chance for an allergic reaction with collagen, so allergy test is done prior to performing collagen implants. Depending on the patient, collagen lasts 1-3 months. Results after the injection are apparent immediately.

These are all examples of hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid fillers are injected into the skin in the same way as collagen. They are more durable than collagen which means the results last longer, often 3-9 months. Since our own bodies make hyaluronic acid, there is very little chance of an allergic reaction. Results after the injection are apparent immediately and may continue to improve 1-2 weeks after the injection.

Radiesse is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite in a gel carrier. It can be injected into wrinkles similar to collagen and the hyaluronic acid fillers. It is also used for facial sculpting and contouring in areas such as the cheek, nose, and jowls. Radiesse lasts 6-12 months. Four to six weeks after injection is the best time to judge improvement. Radiesse works by laying down a matrix under the skin into which the patient’s own collagen grows, thereby decreasing the wrinkles and increasing tissue volume.

Sclerotherapy (vein injections)

This treatment involves injecting a sclerosant directly into the patient’s spider veins on the legs. Sclerosants irritate the blood vessel walls, causing them to collapse and break down and disappear. It typically takes 6-8 weeks to see the full benefit of a sclerotherapy treatment. Multiple treatments are sometimes needed.
